Hail Damage and Your Lease Return: What You Need to Know
Returning a leased vehicle with hail damage can cost thousands in lease-end charges. Here's how to repair it cheaply or pass it through inspection.
# Hail Damage and Your Lease Return
If you're approaching the end of your lease and your vehicle has hail damage, you need to act before turn-in or the lease company will charge you. Here's how it actually works.
## Lease companies do not forgive cosmetic damage
When you signed your lease, you agreed to return the vehicle in "normal wear and tear" condition. Hail damage is **explicitly not normal wear** — it's listed as excess damage in virtually every lease contract. Lease companies charge:
- **$50–$300 per panel** with light hail damage
- **$300–$800 per panel** with moderate hail damage
- **$800–$2,500 per panel** with heavy damage
- **Plus an inspection fee** ($150–$400) to identify all damage
A typical hail-damaged leased vehicle owes the lease company **$3,000–$8,000+** at turn-in.
## Your options
### Option 1: Repair before turn-in (recommended)
- File your insurance claim before lease end
- Get the vehicle PDR'd at a reputable shop
- Return the vehicle in clean condition
- **Total out-of-pocket: $0 to $1,000** (your deductible)
### Option 2: Buy out the lease, repair, and resell or keep
- If your vehicle's residual is below market value, buying out + repairing might net positive
- Compare residual to current ACV (Kelley Blue Book / Edmunds)
- Add repair cost to total acquisition basis
### Option 3: Pre-inspection and damage waiver from your lease company
- Some lease companies (BMW Financial, Tesla Financing, Ford Credit) offer "damage waiver" add-ons for $300–$800/year
- These often cover hail damage at turn-in
- Check your contract before paying out of pocket
### Option 4: Negotiate the lease-end damage charge
- Get an independent PDR estimate before turn-in
- If the lease company's charge is above market, negotiate
- Some lease companies will accept a third-party invoice as proof of pricing
## Timing is critical
Most insurance claims need to be filed within 60–90 days of the storm date. If your lease ends 6 months after a storm, file the claim **immediately** even if you won't repair until later. This locks in your coverage.
